The Kalahari Red Goat, originating from Namibia and South Africa, is a breed known for its resilience and suitability as a meat goat. Farmers across South Africa have recognised its adaptability to extreme temperatures, its calm nature, and their exceptional mothering abilities, making it an ideal choice for their livestock and business needs.
The Kalahari Red breed gained recognition in 1998 and the Kalahari Red Club in South Africa was established on the 5th July 1999.
In 2004, Dr. Marida Roets from the Agricultural Research Council in South Africa confirmed the DNA markers of the Kalahari Red goat breed. The test results showed that the genetic difference between Kalahari Reds and Boer Goats was greater than the difference between Boer Goats and the African Savannah breed.
The Kalahari Red breed was named after the Kalahari Desert, where they originate from in South Africa, and their name also reflects the color similarity between their coat and the sand dunes of the desert.
In 1999, Wallace Kier, Ray Anderson and Peter Firth, imported into Australia embryos from South African breeders, starting the Kalahari Red bloodlines in Australia.
The Kalahari Red Goat gained popularity among Australian Goat Producers & Breeders for its remarkable capacity to enhance weight gain in kids, breed consistently throughout the year, and adapt to Australia's harsh environment and conditions.
Stud producers in Australia are dedicated to maintaining the South African bloodlines through their breeding programs, which focus on Fullblood bucks and does. Additionally, they are actively expanding their high-quality commercial stock. By enhancing the stock quality of fullblood Kalahari Reds, they aim to safeguard the breed within Australia and meet the increasing demand for quality stock for the future.
