The Kalahari Red Goat is a native breed from Namibia and South Africa. Bred for their hardiness and for being a resilient meat goat.
With their calm temperaments, excellent mothering skills, and the ability to cope with South Africa’s extreme temperatures farmers from all over South Africa found that the Kalahari Red met their livestock and business requirements.
By 1998, the Kalahari Red breed was recognised and on the 5th July 1999 the Kalahari Red Club in South Africa was formed. In 2004 the Kalahari Red breed DNA markers was proven by Dr Marida Roets at the Agricultural Research Council in South Africa.
These DNA marker test results proved that the difference between the Kalahari Reds and Boer Goats were greater than between Boer Goats and the African Savannah breed.
The name Kalahari Red was given to the breed as it represents the Kalahari Desert, their home in South Africa and the colour of the desert sand dunes. (KRGSA, kalahariredgoat.net.au, 2021)
In 1999, Wallace Kier, Ray Anderson and Peter Firth, imported into Australia embryos from South African breeders, starting the Kalahari Red bloodlines in Australia.
The Kalahari Red Goat have became popular with Australian Goat Farmers that want to produce a exceptional weight gain in kids, have the ability to breed all year round and the capability to thrive in Australia’s harsh environment and conditions.
Throughout Australia, stud producers are keeping the bloodlines pure, with their breeding programs of fullblood bucks and fullblood does, as well as expanding their quality commerical stock. Improving the stock quality of fullblood Kalahari Reds, will preserve the breed within Australia and the rising demand for quality stock for the export markets.
The KRGSA is the home of registered Kalahari Red goats in Australia. The society supports its members and producers of stud or commercial herds.
